The objective of programmes for the capture and geological storage of CO2 is to prevent the emission into the atmosphere of millions of tonnes of this global-warming gas. The European Union has decided that as of 2015, all thermal electric power plants must be equipped with CO2 capture systems. The ultimate goal is to prevent an increase in the average temperature of the planet.
The Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN) has put into effect in El Bierzo an experimental installation for research into different technologies for capturing CO2. In terms of its characteristics, this plant constitutes a global reference point for activities related to the use of clean coal. In addition, the installation is planning to undertake experiments in several geological formations in order to develop in Spain a solid scientific and technological knowledge related to the geological storage of CO2. Ene.National Energy Museum will host an interpretation centre for the Capture Plant.
