Capital of the Shire of El Bierzo, in the Province of León, Ponferrada is situated at the confluence of the Sil and Boeza Rivers. It has a population of about 70,000 inhabitants, and is the second-most important city of the province, with a metropolitan area of more than 94,000 inhabitants.
The history of the city of Ponferrada has been linked to a strong tradition of the energy sector. Within the framework of the Second Industrial Revolution, the firm “Minero Siderúrgica de Ponferrada” (Ferrous Mining of Ponferrada) constructed the first thermal power plant in order to supply energy to industrial facilities. It was active between 1920 and 1930. Today, it has been transformed into Ene.térmica, the first part of Ene.National Energy Museum to open its doors to the public.
The production of electricity experienced a spectacular amount of growth from 1944 onward, when the firm ENDESA decided to construct in Ponferrada its first large thermal plant, “Compostilla I,” which is today the main building of Ene.National Energy Museum.
El Bierzo, and, in particular, Ponferrada, has been one of the principal production and distribution centres of electricity since 1944.
